No Spend Month

I'm a little late to the party, but had to wait until April to give this a go.

I am deeming April a "No-Spend" Month. I am thinking of it as a way to troubleshoot our budget and maybe save a few pennies in the meantime. I really need to get our garden set up this week which is going to cost a bit. So I'll officially be starting after the week is over. (I had intentions of doing it last month, but ran out of time.)

When I say "No-Spend" I don't literally mean spending nothing. But I do mean no spending outside of our daily living expenses. I will do my best to stick to this but I'm guessing there will be some challenges I have not predicted. I know that I have been on the look out for a used pack-n-play so if I stumble across one I'm not sure yet what I'll do.

April Spending Plan:

$80/week for groceries, toiletries, etc.

Normal utility payments

Gas for cars

I got the idea from Amy, who did this in February. I think Oprah mentioned something similar on a recent "budget" show too.

ETA: My pal Dirkey is doing her version of this too. You know we have to do everything together. :)

so this blogging thing

I just looked at my posts and I have about a dozen drafts languishing away waiting for a link or a pic. Often inspired to write but not so great on the follow-through, huh? Oh well. I think I need to spend some quality time with my camera to spice things up around here.

This weekend was a lot of fun. I was a bridesmaid in my dear friend's wedding. They event took place in Lancaster, PA. A quaint place with beautiful views. Not so quaint was the TORNADO warning that popped up when we were out taking pictures. Driving back to the reception in the extreme winds, rain and hail was quite the adventure! We stuck around a bit today and checked out some shops in Intercourse, PA. *snicker*

Anywho, on the agenda this week is getting the garden prepped and gearing up for our No-Spend Month in April.

and exhale

Had my check up today. I'm about 15 weeks and measuring 15 cm. They found the heartbeat easily this time.

Breathing a sigh of relief. We've made it successfully through the first trimester!

Quote of the Day

“Cleaning house while kids are growing is like shoveling snow while it’s still snowing.”

That is all.

Cran-Orange Muffins

I used the "Muffin Recipe" from the NJ La Leche League cookbook and came up with these little ditties. I love cranberries and citrus together. I tried to keep them on the healthy side so I didn't know how they would taste.
Can I just say that whole wheat pastry flour is the best stuff? It subs in for all-purpose flour so much better than the regular stuff. Here's the recipe as I made it. It yielded about 3 dozen mini muffins. Might have been more if the little guy wasn't trying to eat all the batter.
FYI these are not overly sweet. They are tasty plain and even better with a little butter and honey. They were a big hit at the LLL meeting!

Cran-Orange Muffins

3 eggs

1 cup orange juice

1/3 c. butter, melted and cooled a bit

2 3/4 c. whole wheat pastry flour

4 tsp. baking powder

pinch of salt

3/4 c. chopped cranberries tossed with about 2 Tbs sugar

Mix wet ingredients together. Blend dry ingredients. Stir wet and dry together until JUST moistened. You do not want to overmix. Fold in cranberries. Fill up greased muffin tins almost to the top.
Bake at 400 until they spring back when gently pressed in the middle.
About 10 minutes for mini or 15-20 for regular muffins.

LLL of NJ Conference

The La Leche League of New Jersey conference is coming soon! Go to LLLofNJ.org to check it out.

The annual breastfeeding and parenting conference is going to be April 24-26 at Crowne Plaze Hotel in Cherry Hill. I am most excited that Ina May Gaskin, author and midwifery guru, is going to be the key note speaker.

Non-Toxic Tots is going to be a vendor in the expo center this year! If you are attending be sure to stop by and say hello.

I learned a lot at last years conference and am really looking forward to this year!

I did it!

I officially started the garden. I even made my own newspaper pots!

Today the little guy and I made a trip to the garden center for seeds and some soil.
He had fun helping me pick out the seeds. He wanted "the little carrots" and picked out a pack of marigolds for some reason. He also kept putting packets of watermelon in my basket even though I already had some in there. I was going to order seeds from Seeds of Change, but they were sold out of a few things I wanted and I didn't really feel like paying for shipping. Maybe next year I'll get a few things from them. We'll see how it goes!

I ordered my own copy of New Square Foot Gardening so I don't have to keep borrowing from my mom or the library. I coerced my bro to come down and help me built the boxes this spring.
I'll admit, I am a little put off by the initial costs of building the boxes and purchasing some of the "ingredients" for the soil. But hopefully the results will be worth it. I know W will enjoy helping out in the garden this summer either way.

SNOW!

I know, I've been a boring blogger with no pictures lately. I am not loving my camera these days and just haven't been getting many shots.
We did shoot some video today of W out in his first real snow experience. (If I ever figure out how to edit and upload, I'll post.)
We got about a foot and it was glorious! I looooove the snow and am disappointed if we don't get at least a couple good storms. Well I had to wait until March, but at least we got one this year.

In other news... the Dr couldn't find a heartbeat at my last apt BUT said it wasn't uncommon since the baby is still way down in my pelvis. I am still feeling sick so that will have to be my reassurance for another month. The sickness has tapered off a bit, but is still there. I'm actually eating and keeping food down on a regular basis now. Yay!

So that's all I got today. :)
